German Foreign Minister Praises Stoltenberg’s Leadership at Farewell Ceremony

BERLIN (ChatnewsTV) — German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Tuesday honored Jens Stoltenberg, the outgoing NATO Secretary General, with a heartfelt tribute during the “Grand Tattoo” farewell ceremony, highlighting his contributions to global security and transatlantic unity.

In her speech, Baerbock reflected on Stoltenberg’s leadership, particularly during pivotal moments such as Russia’s annexation of Crimea, NATO’s role in Afghanistan, and the war in Ukraine. She lauded his ability to foster trust through what she called “kitchen table diplomacy.”

“Jens, your leadership during these challenging times has been defined by trust and persistence, and you’ve always remained true to the values of peace, liberty, and democracy,” Baerbock said.

She recalled a personal story from Stoltenberg’s youth, when his father, a former Norwegian foreign minister, hosted Nelson Mandela at their kitchen table, embodying the informal, yet powerful approach to diplomacy that shaped Stoltenberg’s career.

Baerbock also highlighted Stoltenberg’s efforts to strengthen NATO by integrating Sweden and Finland into the alliance, enhancing relations with the Global South, and bringing NATO and the EU closer together.

Referring to Stoltenberg’s crucial role in countering Russian aggression, Baerbock emphasized, “When Vladimir Putin launched his brutal war, his bet was that NATO would break. But we proved him wrong. You proved him wrong.”

Stoltenberg’s tenure saw NATO’s commitment to collective defense reaffirmed, with Baerbock noting, “One for all and all for one — that is the spirit you have embodied, and it remains the foundation of our alliance.”

As Stoltenberg prepares to take on his next role, Baerbock concluded her remarks by thanking him for his service, adding, “I’m going to miss your persistence, your empathy, and your cool-headedness. Thank you for your contribution to security and freedom in Europe.”

Stoltenberg, who served as NATO Secretary General for ten years, will soon begin a new position in Munich.
