Berlin – Germany saw sales of electric vehicles jump in January, as new EU regulations on fleet-wide emissions targets came into force.
The Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) said on Tuesday that 34,498 battery-electric vehicles were registered over the month, a rise of 53.5% compared to January 2024.
Electric vehicles represented 16.6% of the 207,640 cars registered in Germany this month.
The jump was expected as manufacturers held back sales in late 2024, hoping to use extra electric vehicle registrations to hit new targets introduced at the European level in 2025.
Sales of electric cars in Germany slumped last year after a government subsidy was dropped.
Only around 380,600 new electric vehicles were registered over the course of the year, almost 27.5% fewer than in the previous year.
Only 13.5% of vehicles registered in Germany in 2025 were electric.
