Germany Welcomes Ceasefire Between Israel and Hezbollah, Calls for Broader Peace Efforts

BERLIN (CHATNEWSTV) — November 27, 2024 — Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock today praised the newly reached ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, calling it a “glimpse of hope” for the region.

In a statement issued on November 26, Baerbock emphasized the potential for lasting peace and stability, noting the relief it brings to communities on both sides of the border.

“The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah gives the entire region a glimpse of hope,” Baerbock said.

“Hundreds of thousands of women, children, and families in Lebanon can now look to a life without displacement or fear of bombardment. At the same time, the ceasefire gives relief to tens of thousands of people from northern Israel who for more than a year have been subjected to Hezbollah rocket attacks and want nothing more than to return to their homes.”

Baerbock acknowledged the diplomatic efforts behind the agreement, particularly the collaboration between the U.S. and France, which Germany supported through intensive shuttle diplomacy.

“I especially want to thank our American and French friends for this great collaborative achievement and their tireless mediation efforts,” she said.

The minister condemned Hezbollah’s actions, which she described as “drawing all people in Lebanon into this war,” and stressed the importance of full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. She also called on all parties to swiftly take the agreed-upon steps to ensure a lasting peace.

“The people of Lebanon must have the necessary strength to overcome their country’s political and economic stagnation,” Baerbock said, urging Lebanon’s political leaders to resolve the ongoing presidential election crisis.

Baerbock concluded by stressing the need for a broader ceasefire, particularly in Gaza, to end the suffering of civilians and ensure the release of all hostages, including German nationals.

“We now urgently need a ceasefire in Gaza, as well, so that all other hostages, including the German ones, can finally be released, and in order to finally put an end to the suffering and hunger of hundreds of thousands of women, children and men,” she said.
