John Mahama has been inaugurated as the President of Ghana, marking his return to the position after being succeeded by Nana Akufo-Ado in 2017.
Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang was also sworn in as Vice President.
The inauguration ceremony took place at Independence Square in Accra, where the oath of office was administered by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Mahama and Opoku-Agyemang secured their positions through a decisive victory in the December elections, which was essential for Mahama’s return to the presidential villa seven years after his previous departure.
According to Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, Mahama was declared the winner of the 2024 presidential election as the candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), having received over 50 percent of the total votes. He garnered approximately 6.3 million votes, while Opoku-Agyemang received 4.5 million votes, resulting in a substantial defeat of the ruling party’s candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, by a margin of 1.7 million votes.
Mahama achieved 56.6 percent of the votes against Bawumia’s 41.6 percent, representing the largest margin of victory in Ghana in 24 years. Voter turnout for the election was reported at 60.9 percent. Mahama won in 13 of the country’s regions, while Bawumia, who conceded defeat on Sunday, managed to secure victory in only three regions.
