The only surviving member of the old Sokoto State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Minister of water resources, Barrister Mukhtar Shehu Shagari has shifted his allegiance to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Serving under former president Olusegun Obasanjo, Shagari was a PDP cornerstone for over 25 years.
However, this August, he opted to join APC ranks, a move sparking much discussion in political circles.
Observers suggest Shagari’s defection arises from perceived unfair treatment by PDP’s national body, despite his longstanding loyalty.
Many of his peers, including former vice president Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, have similarly left the PDP in recent times.
State APC secretary Alhaji Abubakar Yabo confirmed Shagari’s official party switch, putting to rest speculations that the seasoned politician might stay with the PDP against all odds.
On the other hand, PDP’s Sokoto state leadership views Shagari’s departure as a betrayal, given the party’s previous support for him.
Alhaji Hassan Sahabi Sanyinnawal, the party’s publicity secretary, expressed confidence that this departure won’t impact the PDP’s strength in the state.
