TAPA ARMY BASE, Estonia (ChatnewsTV) — NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte made his first official visit to NATO’s Eastern Flank since taking office, meeting with Estonian leaders and troops stationed at Tapa Army Base.
During his visit on Wednesday, Rutte toured the base with Estonian President Alar Karis, where he expressed gratitude to personnel from Estonia, the UK, France, and Iceland. “You are one of eight NATO battlegroups stretching from the Baltic to the Black Sea, backed by the full weight of NATO’s fighting forces in all domains. Land, air, sea, space, and cyberspace. Every hour of your vigilance reinforces our collective defense,” he said.
The Secretary General lauded Estonia’s substantial defense investment, highlighting the country’s dedication to NATO’s security goals. “By spending over 3% of your GDP on defense, Estonia is truly leading by example. And I know you intend to invest even more in our shared security in the coming years,” Rutte remarked, urging all Allies to strengthen their defense capabilities.
Estonia, one of Ukraine’s staunchest allies, has contributed over 500 million euros in military aid since 2022. “Today we discussed how to bolster our support for Ukraine, now, through the difficult winter ahead, and also for the long-term,” Rutte noted, emphasizing NATO’s commitment to aiding Ukraine with new security assistance and training coordination, as well as a financial pledge of at least 40 billion euros for 2024.
The Secretary General’s agenda also included a meeting with students at Tallinn University and a tribute at the Memorial of the Victims of Communism. Estonia, a NATO member since 2004, hosts a UK-led multinational battlegroup in Tapa and is home to the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence in Tallinn.
