Bayern Munich goalkeeper legend Sepp Maier has backed Manuel Neuer after a red card and believes that he can play in top shape for another two years.
Neuer, 38, was sent off for the first time in his career on Tuesday when he rushed out to clear in front of Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong but came too late and clattered into Frimpong. Bayern went on to lose the German Cup match 1-0.
The incident led to questions whether Neuer was paying tribute to his age and possibly too slow.
But Maier, who won three European Cups with Bayern and the 1974 World Cup, told Saturday’s Abendzeitung paper that he has faith in Neuer, who has also lifted the World Cup as well as two Champions League trophies.
“It was bad luck because split seconds make the difference. It is about speed of mind. I don’t think he has become slow because of his age,” Maier said, adding that Neuer would clear the ball in 95% of such situations.
“He will get over it. Manu himself knows best what he did wrong in the situation.”
Maier said he believes Neuer can have “two more years in top form” because he is “still smooth in his moves” and fully trained.
“He was hailed until last weekend because he kept seven clean sheets in a row. So he should be left in peace now,” Maier insisted.
Neuer was banned for two German Cup games for the red card. He could have played in Saturday’s Bundesliga match against Heidenheim but is sidelined with a rib problem.
