Security Agencies Step Up Presence Across Southeast as IPOB Sit-at-Home Order Looms

Security agencies in Abia and other Southeastern states have heightened their presence in key city centers and suburban areas ahead of a two-day sit-at-home order declared by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The order is scheduled for Monday, October 21, and Tuesday, October 22, 2024.

In response to the IPOB directive, the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has called on residents to disregard a viral video that emerged over the weekend. The video, featuring an unidentified man, urged people to remain at home due to an alleged launch of Biafran Armoured Vehicles.

Describing the order as “baseless and unwarranted,” Uzuegbu, in a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, assured residents that the security forces were well-prepared to maintain peace and security across the state. He emphasized that Enugu has long moved beyond the era of illegal sit-at-home orders driven by secessionist agendas.

“The sit-at-home order is nothing but a deliberate attempt to create fear and disrupt the social, economic, and psychological well-being of the people of Enugu State. The public should go about their lawful activities without fear or intimidation,” Uzuegbu said.

The Commissioner also warned that any attempts by individuals or groups to disrupt public order would be met with firm resistance. He urged parents and guardians to advise their children against involvement in any acts that threaten the peace and security of the state, noting that severe legal consequences await those involved.

Meanwhile, in Aba, Abia State, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) conducted a confidence patrol involving various units across the commercial city. A source from the Aba Area Command disclosed that officers patrolled major roads and identified trouble spots, sending a clear message to potential troublemakers.

Reports indicate that IPOB members attempted to infiltrate Aba on Friday to spread fear among residents and visitors by promoting the sit-at-home order. However, security forces repelled the group, reinforcing their commitment to safeguarding the city.

Banks in Aba have reportedly been advised by their headquarters to closely monitor the situation on Monday before deciding whether to open for business on Tuesday.

As of the time of filing this report, IPOB has neither confirmed nor denied the planned sit-at-home order. Security forces remain on high alert across the Southeast, with increased patrols and surveillance to ensure public safety.

Authorities have urged residents to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station as the region braces for the potential disruptions.
