BOGOTÁ, Colombia (CHATNEWSTV) — Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard wrapped up a two-day visit to Colombia last week, highlighting Sweden’s commitment to peace, gender equality, and trade cooperation with the South American nation.
During her visit to Bogotá and Chocó, Stenergard met with Colombian President Gustavo Petro and newly appointed Foreign Minister Laura Sarabia. She also held talks with Vice President Francia Márquez on bilateral relations, human rights, and sustainable development.
“Sweden and Colombia share a strong partnership, and we are committed to deepening our cooperation in areas like peacebuilding, gender equality, and the green transition,” Stenergard said.
Stenergard also signed a bilateral law enforcement agreement with Colombia’s Minister of Justice Ángela María Buitrago and Minister of National Defence Iván Velásquez. The pact aims to strengthen efforts against organized crime, drug trafficking, and cyber threats.
In Chocó, she visited projects supported by Sweden and UN Women, meeting with local organizations working on peace initiatives and humanitarian aid. “Women’s empowerment is key to achieving lasting peace,” she said, announcing further Swedish support for UN Women’s programs in Colombia.
The visit underscored Sweden’s growing role in Colombia’s peace process, economic cooperation, and environmental sustainability.
