ABUJA, Nigeria (CHATNEWSTV) — The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Shehu Gabam, has warned that President Bola Tinubu’s chances of securing re-election are slim due to what he described as “anti-masses policies.”
“He needs to review some of his policies, he needs to rejig his cabinet if he wants to leave a legacy,” Gabam said in an interview on Inside Sources with Loalu Akande on Channels TV. “I don’t see him surviving another election with the same kind of policies going on.”
Gabam pointed to the removal of the petrol subsidy, unification of forex rates, electricity tariff hikes, and telecom tariff increases as decisions that have fueled public discontent. He compared the growing opposition to Tinubu’s administration with the early backlash faced by former President Goodluck Jonathan, who lost re-election in 2015.
“Protests against Jonathan started two years [into his administration], and he couldn’t survive it,” he said. “If people are thinking they will use money to win, they are mistaken. You will only rig while you are popular.”
He also criticized the administration’s handling of opposition voices. “The moment you advise them, they see you as an enemy,” he said. “They forget that some political parties stood by INEC at the point of announcing the election results because we didn’t want anarchy.”
Gabam urged Tinubu to reconsider his policies if he hopes to leave a lasting legacy.
