WASHINGTON, D.C. (Oct. 3, 2024) — The United States and the Republic of Gabon have announced their intent to elevate diplomatic relations and expand cooperation across key sectors, including democracy, economic development, and security.
In a joint statement, released on Thursday, marks the 64th anniversary of U.S.-Gabon diplomatic relations and underscores both nations’ commitment to a strengthened partnership.
“Gabon’s dedication to a democratic transition offers an opportunity to deepen our collaboration,” the statement reads. The U.S. government is set to support Gabon’s political transition through the African Democratic and Political Transitions (ADAPT) initiative, providing technical assistance for free and fair elections, alongside collaboration with the Consortium for Elections and Political Process Strengthening (CEPPS) and the U.S. Institute of Peace.
On the economic front, the United States and Gabon aim to boost trade and investment. A recent event hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce highlighted growing private-sector engagement, and the U.S. Development Finance Cooperation (DFC) plans further investment in Gabon, including projects in marine conservation and infrastructure.
“Together, we are committed to promoting sustainable development and economic growth,” the statement continued. USAID is set to establish a full-time Country Manager in Gabon in 2025, signaling deepened involvement in Gabon’s economic progress.
Environmental cooperation is also a priority, with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service providing additional funding for Gabon’s conservation efforts, including a $2 million increase for programs managing human-elephant interactions. Plans are underway to strengthen Gabon’s ability to combat illegal timber exports with advanced technology from the U.S. Forest Service.
In terms of security, the U.S. and Gabon will work to bolster maritime security and surveillance capabilities, with support for port security, radar sites, and maritime patrol vessels. “We share a common goal of enhancing security in the Atlantic Basin and protecting Gabon’s natural resources,” the joint statement emphasized. Additionally, the two nations plan to continue joint defense initiatives, including Gabon’s partnership with the West Virginia National Guard for emergency response training.
The joint statement concludes with a commitment to regular diplomatic contact and ongoing efforts to finalize a defense cooperation agreement.
