ABUJA, Nigeria (CHATNEWSTV) — The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria has issued a security alert warning of increased criminal activities during the December holiday season in Nigeria.
In an alert release on Tuesday, the advisory highlights heightened risks of theft, kidnapping, and other crimes, urging heightened vigilance as travel and shopping activities peak.
“Historically, we see a rise in crimes like pickpocketing, home burglaries, and kidnappings during the holidays,” the alert stated, advising residents and travelers to adopt measures that reduce their risk of becoming victims.
Key recommendations include staying alert in public spaces, avoiding predictable routines, and securing valuables. The Embassy also encouraged the use of app-based transportation services and heightened caution during nighttime outings.
The advisory emphasized situational awareness, with specific tips such as locking car doors and not leaving packages in plain sight. “Simple precautions can go a long way in safeguarding personal safety,” the statement noted.
Both the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos remain operational. Travelers seeking assistance or further information are encouraged to visit the Embassy’s website or contact the State Department’s Consular Affairs office.
