WASHINGTON (CHATNEWSTV) — The United States has voiced concerns over the Mozambican Constitutional Council’s decision on the country’s October 9 national elections, citing irregularities and a lack of transparency throughout the electoral process.
“The United States is concerned by the December 23 announcement by the Mozambican Constitutional Council,” State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a statement on Monday. “Civil society organizations, political parties, the media, and international observers, including those from the United States, cited significant irregularities in the tabulation process.”
Miller urged stakeholders to avoid violence and engage in meaningful collaboration to restore peace and unity in the Southern African nation.
“Those responsible for violations of human rights, including the killing of protesters and party officials and excessive use of force by security forces, must be held accountable,” he added.
The elections, marred by allegations of voter intimidation and fraud, have sparked widespread unrest and drawn criticism from both domestic and international observers.
The U.S. called on Mozambique to enact reforms to strengthen its democratic institutions. “Mozambicans deserve elections that are free of violence and that reflect the will of the people,” Miller said. “We urge all stakeholders to commit to serious electoral and institutional reforms to secure the future of Mozambique as a genuine multiparty democracy.”
There has been no immediate response from Mozambican authorities regarding the U.S. statement. The political and social climate in Mozambique remains tense as the international community continues to monitor the situation closely.
