Wilson Center Announces Martin J. Sherwin Fellowship for Emerging Scholars in Nuclear History

Washington, D.C. – January 26, 2024 — The Wilson Center, in collaboration with the Sherwin family, is proud to introduce the Martin J. Sherwin Fellowship, aimed at supporting research projects by emerging scholars in the field of nuclear history. This prestigious fellowship is open to post-doctoral researchers, recent PhD graduates, and junior faculty members from all disciplines with a keen interest in nuclear history.

The three-to-six-month residential fellowship offers a monthly stipend of $4,000, along with travel expenses, to facilitate independent research at the Wilson Center and in Washington, D.C. Fellows will benefit from office space at the Center, access to the extensive holdings of the Library of Congress, and an opportunity to present their work in a public forum during or shortly after their tenure.

Applications for the inaugural Martin J. Sherwin Fellowship are invited starting January 5, 2024. The deadline for submission is February 15, 2024, and successful applicants will be announced publicly by March 31, 2024.

Applicants, regardless of nationality, are encouraged to apply, but international applicants must hold a valid passport and be eligible to obtain a J-1 visa. English proficiency is a requirement to facilitate the exchange of ideas among fellows.

Fellows are expected to dedicate full time to their research project during the fellowship period and may not undertake teaching assignments or other major activities that necessitate prolonged absence from the Wilson Center. Final reports assessing the fellowship experience are due within one month of its conclusion.

Both nominations and self-applications are welcome. A complete application package includes an application cover letter, an essay on planned objectives and activities, a curriculum vitae, a list of relevant literature and resources, and one letter of recommendation. The deadline for submission is February 15, 2024.

The selection process, guided by a peer-review committee, will assess the merit of the proposed research project and the applicant’s qualifications and experience. Results will be announced by March 31, 2024.

The Martin J. Sherwin Fellowship is generously supported by Marty’s family members, friends, colleagues, former students, and philanthropic foundations. Administered by the Wilson Center’s History & Public Policy Program, the fellowship honors the memory and accomplishments of Martin J. Sherwin, a distinguished scholar in nuclear history.
