Abuja, 27 June 2024 – Aisha Sani Maikudi, a distinguished professor of international law, has been appointed as the acting vice-chancellor (VC) of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja). This appointment makes her the first female to hold this position at the university.

Habib Yakoob, UniAbuja’s acting director of public relations, confirmed the appointment in an official statement released on Thursday. The decision followed Maikudi’s nomination at a valedictory senate meeting held on the university’s main campus.

Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, the outgoing vice-chancellor whose tenure concluded on June 30, noted that Maikudi’s appointment is currently in a temporary capacity, pending ratification by the university’s governing council.

In her acceptance speech, Maikudi expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support from the senate members. “I am deeply honored and grateful for the strong support I have received from the senate. This is a significant step for us all,” she remarked.

Born on January 31, 1983, Maikudi is the youngest female professor of law in Northwestern Nigeria and at UniAbuja. Her educational journey began at Queens College, Lagos, where she obtained her West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). She then proceeded to the University of Reading, graduating with an LLB in 2004, followed by an LLM from the London School of Economics & Political Science in 2005. She completed her PhD in International Law in 2015 from the University of Abuja.

Maikudi joined UniAbuja as a Lecturer II on September 4, 2008, and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a professor in 2022. She made history once again in 2018 by becoming the first female deputy dean of the university’s law faculty and later served as the pioneer director of the University of Abuja International Centre in 2019.

Throughout her career, Maikudi has been actively involved in numerous national and international conferences across the UK, the US, South Africa, Germany, Italy, and Egypt. She has conducted extensive research on United Nations Law and has published prolifically in this field.

Maikudi’s professional affiliations include memberships in the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the Nigerian Law Teachers Association (NLTA), and the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA).
