Abdulbasit Kassim, a US-based Nigerian scholar, has declared the establishment of N400,000 scholarships for four Nigerian students. The scholarships, named the “Memorial Need-Based Scholarships,” are dedicated to the memory of Mr. Kassim’s two brothers and two lecturers.
Mr. Kassim expressed that the scholarships are specifically designed to provide tuition support to first and second-year students pursuing studies in the humanities and social sciences across tertiary institutions within the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria. Unlike many existing scholarships in the country, which often focus on STEM fields, these scholarships aim to address the gap by prioritizing students in humanities and social sciences.
The memorial scholarships are named after individuals who have left a lasting impact on Mr. Kassim’s life – Muhammad Usman Barau, Abdulwasiu Olorunfemi Omojarabi, Dr. Sunday Suleiman, and Mallam Abdullahi Tanko Umaru. The scholarships aim to honor their memories by supporting students who demonstrate academic promise but may face financial challenges.
Mr. Kassim highlighted that there is no minimum CGPA requirement for applicants, encouraging students who may have faced academic struggles to apply. The N100,000 fund for each scholarship will be directly disbursed to the recipient’s institution to cover their tuition fees.
The pilot scheme comprises four categories, with each winner awarded N100,000. The categories are the Muhammad Usman Barau Memorial Scholarship Fund, Sunday Suleiman Memorial Scholarship Fund, Abdulwasiu Olorunfemi Omojarabi Memorial Scholarship Fund, and Abdullahi Tanko Umaru Memorial Scholarship Fund.
