Washington, D.C. — In a momentous gathering to mark the 75th anniversary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), leaders from member states convened in Washington, D.C., reaffirming their commitment to collective security and addressing a plethora of global challenges.
“NATO remains the strongest alliance in history, standing united and in solidarity in the face of aggression and critical security threats,” declared NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in his opening address. The summit underscored NATO’s foundational values of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, emphasizing their vital role in maintaining international peace and security.
Welcoming New Allies and Strengthening Defense
The summit celebrated the accession of Sweden as NATO’s 32nd member, alongside Finland, enhancing security in the High North and the Baltic Sea. “Every nation has the right to choose its own security arrangements,” Stoltenberg noted, reaffirming NATO’s Open Door Policy.
NATO’s leaders condemned Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, identifying it as a grave threat to Euro-Atlantic stability. “Russia’s actions have shattered peace in our region and gravely undermined global security,” the statement read. The leaders reiterated their support for Ukraine, pledging continued military and humanitarian aid.
Addressing Global Security Threats
The summit highlighted various global threats, including terrorism, strategic competition, and the destabilizing actions of Iran and China. “We are confronted by hybrid, cyber, space, and other threats from both state and non-state actors,” Stoltenberg emphasized.
A key focus was on the strengthening of NATO’s deterrence and defense posture. Leaders announced steps to bolster their collective defense capabilities, including the modernization of air surveillance, enhancement of cyber defense, and reinforcement of NATO’s Eastern Flank. “We have undertaken the biggest reinforcement of our collective defense in a generation,” Stoltenberg remarked.
Economic Contributions and Defense Spending
NATO leaders commended the majority of member states for meeting or exceeding the 2% GDP defense spending commitment. “Defense expenditure by European Allies and Canada has grown by 18% in 2024, the biggest increase in decades,” Stoltenberg highlighted. This increase in spending is crucial for addressing the current contested security environment and ensuring NATO’s readiness to respond to any threats.
Long-Term Security Assistance for Ukraine
In a significant move, NATO leaders announced a Pledge of Long-Term Security Assistance for Ukraine, committing to a minimum of €40 billion in military aid within the next year. This support includes the provision of military equipment, training, and infrastructure investments. “Our unwavering commitment to Ukraine as a sovereign, democratic state is clear. Ukraine’s future is in NATO,” Stoltenberg asserted.
Responding to Russian Aggression
The summit decisively condemned Russia’s continued aggressive actions, including its nuclear rhetoric and hybrid operations. “Russia’s behavior will not deter our resolve and support to Ukraine,” the leaders affirmed. They also called on China to cease its support for Russia’s war effort, stressing that such actions negatively impact global security.
Strengthening Partnerships and Global Cooperation
NATO’s partnerships with the European Union, Asia-Pacific nations, and other global partners were highlighted as crucial for enhancing stability and addressing common security challenges. “The Indo-Pacific is important for NATO as developments in that region directly affect Euro-Atlantic security,” Stoltenberg noted.

The summit concluded with a tribute to those who have sacrificed for collective security and an expression of appreciation to the United States for hosting the event. Looking ahead, NATO leaders committed to meeting again in The Hague in 2025, continuing their efforts to ensure the Alliance remains the bedrock of shared security.
“The decisions we have taken will ensure that NATO remains steadfast in protecting our one billion citizens, defending our territory, and safeguarding our freedom and democracy,” Stoltenberg concluded.
