Burna Boy: The Only Nigerian on This Year’s TIME 100

Must read

Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has been included in Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2024.

In addition, US-based British rapper 21 Savage is the only rapper to appear on Time’s list this year.

Legendary Beninese singer Angelique Kidjo wrote a tribute to Ogulu on Time’s website. She noted that Ogulu played a pivotal role in the global acceptance of African music. Kidjo wrote: “Burna Boy has made that vision acceptance of African music a global reality. His music draws from the rich well of Nigerian folk traditions, and he carries the torch lit by Fela Kuti. He is history in the making.”

Burna Boy also wrote a tribute to 21 Savage on Time’s website. He noted that the British star’s approach to rap is “authentic” and “refreshingly genuine.” He wrote, “Like 21 Savage, I know what it’s like to rise above challenging beginnings, and it makes his success all that much more remarkable. Throughout his work—including on his newest album, American Dream, which opens with a reflection by his mother on their immigration story—21 maintains an authenticity that resonates deeply.”

Burna Boy said he had the privilege of sharing “one of my most significant milestones with 21, performing with him at the Grammys.” He added: “I’m excited to witness the greater evolution of his artistry and the impact he continues to make on the world stage.”

The Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People recognition honours individuals who have made a significant impact on the world through their art, activism, and cultural influence.
