Brussels, 28 June 2024 – The European Council has unanimously nominated Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas as the candidate for High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. This prestigious role will place Kallas at the helm of the European Union’s foreign policy and security strategy, reinforcing her  influence on the international stage.

In a statement, Kallas expressed her gratitude for the Council’s support, acknowledging the immense responsibility that comes with this position during a time of geopolitical tensions. “I am honoured by the support of the European Council, this is an enormous responsibility at this moment of geopolitical tensions,” she said.

Kallas highlighted the key challenges that lie ahead, notably the war in Europe and the increasing instability in the EU’s neighbourhood and globally. She emphasized her commitment to achieving EU unity, protecting the EU’s interests and values in the changed geopolitical context, and building global partnerships. “The war in Europe, increasing instability in our neighbourhood and globally are the main challenges for European foreign policy,” she noted.

Her main aim, Kallas stated, will be to work on achieving EU unity and to strive for close cooperation with all EU Member States and institutions. “I will strive to work with all EU Member States and institutions to keep and strengthen EU unity,” she affirmed.

Kallas also mentioned the importance of the upcoming hearing in the European Parliament, aiming to garner the support of the Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). “The next step is of course the hearing in the European Parliament – it will be my aim to now reach out to MEPs and achieve their support,” she said.

Expressing her eagerness to collaborate with other European leaders, Kallas said, “I am glad about the opportunity to work closely with Antonio Costa and Ursula von der Leyen – I have already worked side by side with them for several years and will continue to do so with pleasure, I have a lot of respect for them both.”

Concluding her statement, Kallas reiterated her dedication to serving the common interests of Europe, aspiring for a continent where people are free, safe, and prosperous. “As HRVP, I will be at the service of our common interests. Europe should be a place where people are free, safe and prosperous. My work has been and will continue to be guided by these aims,” she declared.
