BRUSSELS — The European Union condemned North Korea’s recent launch of an intermediate-range ballistic missile, which Pyongyang claimed was equipped with a hypersonic warhead, saying the test violated several United Nations Security Council resolutions and heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
“The DPRK’s missile launch is a clear violation of multiple UN Security Council resolutions and poses a further escalation in the region,” a statement from the EU’s foreign affairs office said on Tuesday.
The EU reiterated its solidarity with South Korea and Japan, both of whom have been directly affected by North Korea’s provocative actions.
“We express our full solidarity with our partners in the region, especially the Republic of Korea and Japan,” the statement read. “We urge the DPRK to cease such illegal and escalatory actions, and to engage in dialogue with all main parties.”
The EU emphasized that dialogue remains the only path to achieving lasting peace and security on the Korean Peninsula, calling on North Korea to return to diplomatic negotiations.
The latest missile test is seen as part of North Korea’s ongoing military developments, which have raised concerns about the stability of the region.
