LONDON (CHATNEWSTV) — France, Germany, and the United Kingdom on Monday condemned Iran’s recent expansion of its nuclear program, citing reports from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) about increased uranium enrichment and centrifuge installations at the Fordow facility.
In a joint statement, the three governments expressed grave concerns over Iran’s decision to significantly boost the production of uranium enriched to 60% purity, a level close to weapons-grade. “We are extremely concerned to learn that Iran has increased the number of centrifuges in use and started preparations to install additional enrichment infrastructure, further increasing Iran’s enrichment capacity,” the statement read.
The European nations, known collectively as the E3, reiterated their commitment to dialogue following recent discussions with Iranian officials on nuclear and sanctions issues. However, they criticized Iran for actions that they claim undermine the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA), the 2015 nuclear deal.
“These actions have further hollowed out the JCPoA, will increase Iran’s high enriched uranium stockpile—which already has no credible civilian justification—and have taken place before the IAEA has been able to implement necessary additional safeguards measures,” the statement added.
The E3 called on Iran to reverse its steps and halt its nuclear escalation immediately. “We strongly urge Iran to prioritize constructive behavior and cease actions that raise tensions,” they said.
