Brussels, April 22, 2024 – Her Majesty the Queen of the Belgians will inaugurate the fifth edition of the World Cocoa Conference (WCC) at The Square conference center in Brussels. The conference, scheduled to commence on April 22, marks a pivotal moment in the global cocoa economy landscape.

“The World Cocoa Conference 2024 stands as a beacon of hope and collaboration in our collective pursuit of a more sustainable cocoa economy,” remarked the Belgium Foreign Ministry in a press release.

The event, which convenes delegates from over 52 member states, including 29 cocoa-importing nations like Belgium, aims to address critical issues facing the cocoa sector. Amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and evolving market dynamics, the conference seeks to foster dialogue on key themes such as ensuring a living income for cocoa farmers, environmental sustainability, and human rights.

“We are at a crucial juncture in the cocoa sector, where concerted efforts are imperative to address pressing challenges and chart a course towards a more equitable and sustainable future,” stated the Belgium Foreign Ministry.

The conference’s agenda reflects a comprehensive approach, covering topics ranging from agricultural models and gender inclusivity to environmental due diligence and governance policies. With stakeholders representing various segments of the cocoa value chain, including farmers, cooperatives, multinational corporations, and NGOs, the WCC 2024 provides a platform for dialogue, innovation, and collaboration.

Belgium’s commitment to sustainable cocoa is underscored by initiatives such as the national platform for sustainable chocolate, “Beyond Chocolate,” established in 2018. Through partnerships with industry stakeholders and development agencies, Belgium aims to ensure the sustainability of its chocolate supply chain by 2030, with a focus on promoting a living income for cocoa producers.

“As the host of the World Cocoa Conference 2024, Belgium reaffirms its dedication to advancing sustainable cocoa practices and fostering partnerships for positive change,” affirmed the Belgium Foreign Ministry.

With the global spotlight on Brussels, the WCC 2024 represents an opportunity for the international community to collectively address the challenges and opportunities inherent in the cocoa sector, paving the way for a more prosperous and sustainable future.
