WASHINGTON (CHATNEWSTV) — Louisiana Republican Mike Johnson has been re-elected as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, securing the position in an initial round of voting that largely followed party lines, Fox News reported.
Johnson’s re-election comes despite objections from some conservative members of his party who criticized his approach to government funding and legislative priorities during the 118th Congress.
“This is a pivotal time for our country, and I am deeply honored to continue serving as Speaker,” Johnson said in a statement following the vote. “We have work to do, and I am committed to leading with integrity and purpose.”
Supporters of Johnson warned that a prolonged battle over the Speakership could have derailed Congress’ preparations for the January 6 joint session to certify President-elect Donald Trump’s victory.
Trump, who has been a vocal supporter of Johnson, reiterated his endorsement shortly before the vote, describing him as “a strong leader with a clear vision for the future.”
Johnson’s leadership will be tested as Congress navigates critical issues, including budget negotiations and legislative priorities, in the coming months.
