PARIS, June 28, 2024 — With just over two months until the Paralympic Games commence, Paris is making history by installing the iconic Paralympic Agitos on the Arc de Triomphe, marking a significant moment in the run-up to the first Paralympic Games hosted by France. The installation of the Agitos, a symbol representing movement and unity in the Paralympic community, occurred three weeks after the Olympic rings were unveiled on the Eiffel Tower, signifying a unified celebration of both events.

“For the first time in the history of the Games, we are proud to bring the Paralympic Agitos and the Olympic rings together in public view before the commencement of the Olympic Games,” said Tony Estanguet, President of Paris 2024. “This act underlines our commitment to equality and inclusion in sports. On August 28, the Champs Elysées will transform into the Avenue of the Paralympic Games for an Opening Ceremony in the heart of the city that promises to be memorable.”

The Agitos, which symbolize athletes from around the world coming together, were installed atop the Arc de Triomphe by teams from ArcelorMittal, using precision techniques and equipment, including cranes and drones. The structure, made entirely of recycled steel, stands as a testament to sustainable practices and French craftsmanship.

“The display of the Agitos on one of the world’s most recognized monuments is a very special moment, signifying that the Paralympic Games are just around the corner,” expressed Andrew Parsons, President of the International Paralympic Committee. “This is a proud moment for the Paralympic movement and a significant step towards promoting inclusivity and recognition on a global scale.”

Marie Lavandier, President of the Centre des Monuments Nationaux (CMN), highlighted the broader cultural engagement with the Olympic movement, mentioning, “The Flame will pass through many of our monuments, accompanied by an ambitious cultural program, including an exceptional exhibition on the history of the Paralympics at the Panthéon, which embodies the values of inclusion and surpassing oneself.”

Éric Niedziela, Chairman of ArcelorMittal France, also emphasized the sustainable aspect of the Agitos, “Our teams in France, using 100% recycled steel, have proudly demonstrated their expertise. This aligns with Paris 2024’s goal to halve its CO2 emissions, further committing to an environmentally responsible and inclusive sporting event.”
