Brussels, July 2, 2024 – President of the European Council Charles Michel welcomed President of Montenegro Jakov Milatović to Brussels today, marking a major step in Montenegro’s EU accession journey. The meeting comes in the wake of postponed visits due to recent political developments in Montenegro.

The discussions emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum in Montenegro’s EU reform agenda following the landmark Intergovernmental Conference (IGC) and the positive Interim Benchmark Assessment Reports (IBARs) for chapters 23 and 24.

“After the landmark IGC and positive IBARs last week, it is crucial to stay on the EU track across all aspects, united on the EU reform agenda,” President Michel stated. He emphasized that the EU relies on Montenegro to continue the positive reform momentum and deliver on the EU strategic path, not only in words but also through concrete actions by all political actors.

Michel underscored the fresh momentum in the EU enlargement process, highlighting Montenegro’s role as a frontrunner. “Montenegro has a real opportunity to advance in the accession process. This opportunity should not be wasted or taken for granted,” he said.

The meeting also touched on the importance of good neighborly relations, which remain an essential element of the accession process. President Michel acknowledged President Milatović’s commitment to maintaining these relations.

“Good neighborly relations should not be jeopardized. I appreciate President Milatović’s dedication in this regard,” Michel added.

President Milatović reaffirmed Montenegro’s commitment to its EU aspirations and the necessary reforms. “We are dedicated to joining the EU as the next member state, and we will continue to work diligently to meet all requirements,” he assured.
