Frankfurt – Jaden Agassi, the son of former tennis greats Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi, has been nominated into Germany’s national baseball team for the first time.
The German baseball and softball federation DBV and hosts Major League Baseball (MLB) said that 23-year-old pitcher Agassi was picked for a world championship qualifying tournament next month in Tucson, Arizona.
Graf and Agassi were both long-time number one tennis players and share 30 grand slam titles between them, both having won each of the four majors. They also have a daughter, Jaz Elle, who is two years younger than her brother.
Jaden Agassi chose baseball as his sport and plays for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in the MLB Draft League.
“Agassi is a very tennis last name, of course. The goal is to try to make it a baseball one,” the MLB statement quoted him as telling WKBN News. “It’s always been my sport.”
Germany play China, Brazil and Colombia between March 2 and 5 in the qualifyinbg tournament, with two of them advancing to the World Baseball Classics which serve as the official world championships since 2013.
