Agency Report –
Partial approval for Merz proposals
Wagenknecht considers the five-point plan for a stricter migration policy, much criticised by Union chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz, to be partly correct, but criticises some aspects as symbolic politics. Among other things, the plan envisaged rejections at the borders and permanent border controls. ‘We should turn back arrivals at important checkpoints, but it is also true that we cannot close 4,000 kilometres of German borders,’ emphasised Wagenknecht.
The vote was heavily criticised by other parties. The BSW abstained on the first motion for a resolution, but voted in favour of the ‘influx limitation law’, which ultimately failed.
Wagenknecht confident despite falling poll ratings
With a view to the Bundestag elections and the BSW’s recent drop in the polls to four per cent in some cases, Wagenknecht said: ‘We have mastered four elections with flying colours, but it was clear that the Bundestag election campaign would be much more difficult.’ The BSW has few resources, little money and no nationwide structures to date. Despite limited resources and resistance, Wagenknecht is convinced that the BSW will make it into the Bundestag.
